SUMMARY: The Development Engineer is responsible for developing custom and next generation equipment from conceptualization through implementation. He/She should have a demonstrated comprehensive machine design background, strong conceptual capability and an understanding of machine control and operation.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The Development Engineer must demonstrate competence in the following areas.

  • Conceptualizes complete machine designs and related processes.
  • Prepares machine concept sketches. Creates 3D models, timing and sequencing diagrams, plus any design calculations to support concepts and processes.
  • Assists in the preparation of machinery development cost estimates and market cost justification. Produces conceptual diagrams and calculations to support estimates.
  • Leads and participates in a project team in the development of new high-speed rewind and folding equipment.
  • Travels on occasion to customer and vendor locations for consultation prior to machine development as requested by the Engineering Manager.
  • Prepares written literature for machine operation, maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Assists with start-up, troubleshooting and correction of new machine designs on the shop assembly floor.  Follows-up on machine field experience to improve machines and machine design.
  • Evaluates new purchased components used in the development of new equipment. Visits vendor sites to validate operation of complex systems. Works with purchasing to optimize cost expenditure of new components.
  • Leads each project to final completion.
  • Checks final drawings prepared by designers and engineers working on the development program.
  • Manages the work of any outside resource for design assistance.
  • Assists other Engineers with design and detail tasks as needed.
  • Participates in continuous improvement initiatives including but not limited to Lean. 
  • Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned at the discretion of the Engineering Manager.

EDUCATION/JOB EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field required.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ prior machine design experience required. 
  • Prior experience developing high speed packaging or web handling equipment.
  • Patents for system or machine developments.
  • 3D experience with Autodesk Inventor.
  • Experience working with Servos and VFDs.
  • Experience in rewinding and folding machines a plus. 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Demonstrated comprehensive machine design background.
  • Strong conceptual capability.
  • Excellent mathematical skills for supportive calculations. 
  • Project management skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal skills.
  • Understanding of machine control and operation.
  • Must have supportive understanding of electrical components in order to work with Electrical Engineers for the development of the equipment control system and its function. 
  • Travel up to 25%.
